Darwin once suggested that the survival of a species depended on its adaptability to its ever changing environment.

Instagram Not Just for Selfies

The same can be said about business. Businesses have the obligation to keep up with the times to ensure its survival. Social media has been the saving grace for a lot of businesses that perhaps don’t have millions of dollars to spend on advertising. It’s not uncommon for a business to have a website, a Twitter feed and a Facebook page, but what about an Instagram account? Is an Instagram account necessary?

A #Hashtag Paints a Thousand Words?

I am a firm believer that a picture paints a thousand words. What could those thousand words say about your business? Whether you provide a service, or produce an item, you need to be able to reach a varied audience quickly.

The first step would be to plan “hashtags” that would best describe your business. A “hashtag” is a word or a phrase that is preceded by the pound symbol (#). For example, if you are a shoe aficionado, you may explore the hashtag #shoes or even, #shoeaficionado.

Notice that when using a phrase instead of just a word in your hashtag, there are no spaces. These hashtags serve as hyperlinks to unite followers to the topics that interest them. It’s a great way to explore and discover accounts that may have normally been ignored. Hashtags are a great way to drive traffic towards your account and ultimately to your website. You build a following and then those followers have followers that may ultimately follow you.

It sounds like a lot of work and it is. A lot of companies are now hiring persons whose sole job is to promote and market the business via social media. It’s a worldwide market that never sleeps and all you need is the right connection.

What tips has your business used to find success with social media?

I’m a big fan of hashtags. Just the other day we were talking about the MetLife building in Manhattan and wanted to know what it looked like. After a google search we found a lot of pictures, but they were mostly years old. We jumped on Instagram, searched #metlife and #metlifebuilding and found thousands of pictures, some just taken minutes ago giving us a real time view of the building. That’s powerful.

    Hiya Kenny,
    Great post.
I am fairly new to instagram (@nadianlp) and while I have a decent following on Twitter (over 15k) by now, have found Instagram a different animal. I and am still under 100 followers in about 90 days.
I do use the Hash tags which helps a lot would you consider doing a meet up on Instagram mktng and also Twitter conversions ?
    Thank you so much.

That’s a great idea! Instagram is definitely a different beast. We’re working on a couple client accounts right now and it can be tricky to get the ball rolling sometimes, for sure.

        Hey Kenny,
I agree, I guess it is good to have a presence on it. It seems to be more effective when you really get into it, but who has time to photograph every nuance of their life. Pinterest too, perhaps great for Bloggers and affiliate Marketers as a strategy. Perhaps not so much for a real Consultant. Your thoughts ?
